Superior Douglas County Family YMCA

YOUTH SPORTS

The Y Youth Sports Program is an excellent way to introduce your child to the popular sports of flag football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, and t-ball. This program teaches the skills in each sport, while also focusing on the development of hand-eye coordination and motor-skills. Players learn the concepts of team work and fair play while interacting with other children. These programs place a high emphasis on having fun & ensuring that each player has equal opportunity to play.

Volunteer Coaches
Youth sports at the Y are a success in large part because of all the volunteer coaches. Each team in each league is coached, often by a parent, on a volunteer basis. Each Youth Sports program has opportunities for volunteers to coach, assist and referee games. If you’re a parent of a child enrolling in a youth sport and would like to be a coach, please provide information on the registration form.

Here are the youth sports programs we are offering this winter:

FRIDAY NIGHT HOOPS @ The Y!

This very popular program started at UW-Superior a few years ago as a recreational league open to all youth in grades 9-12. It has changed sites, days and times and was nearly out of options. But The Y is excited to announce we are the new site for Friday Night Hoops! Thanks in large part to Rick Rockwood and the original league board along with SHS staff, Ray Kosey and Krista Soderstrom just to name a few, we have a new home for this league!

4K through 2nd Grade Basketball

This is an introductory-level basketball program offered to all youth currently in the 4K-2nd grades. Each team meets once per week for a one hour practice and plays one game on Saturdays. All practices and games are here at the Y. Each team is coached by parent-volunteers which are assisted & supervised by YMCA Youth Sports staff.
REGISTRATION HAS CLOSED FOR THE YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUE. If you missed out, we would love to see your child participate in the upcoming Indoor Soccer league OR the Winter Volleyball league!

Indoor Soccer
This is an introductory-level soccer program available for ALL youth in grades 4K - 6th. Each team is coached by volunteer parent/coaches. The 4K-K & 1-2 Divisions have 30-minute practices on Saturdays right before their games. The 3-6 Division practices on Thursday evenings and plays their games on Saturday mornings. All practices and games are here at The Y. We emphasize skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship in a relaxed atmosphere that promotes personal growth and development without the added pressure of being expected to win, win, win. We strive to help the participants to grow athletically and socially and learn about discipline and responsibility at the same time.

Winter Volleyball
If you missed out on the Fall League or want to continue working on your skills some more, we invite your son or daughter to join us in the 5th year of Winter Volleyball! This league is offered to ALL students in grades 3 - 6. While coached by volunteer parent/coaches, Y Staff will work hard to ensure that all participants receive equal attention and playing time. This league is less about winning at all costs and MUCH more about enjoying this fantastic team sport. All teams practice and play right here at The Y. Practices and games will both be scheduled for Sunday evenings ONLY. Each team will practice before they play.
