PRE-SEASON:
Our pre-season is the perfect way to jump back in the pool and get a head start before the regular swim season begins. We’ll brush up on stroke technique, build endurance, and shake off the rust with fun drills and games. It’s a great way to reconnect with teammates, build confidence, and get back into swim shape. Then, we’ll roll right into our full swim season—stronger and more ready than ever! Pre-season will start September 2nd and run through October 2nd. Practices will be held on Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays at the YMCA pool.
Cost: $150/member and $180/community member REGISTER
EVERYONE SWIMS; EVERYONE WINS!
We believe this philosophy is perfect for our swim team program. It helps build confidence in all swimmers, regardless of age or experience, because we understand that there's more to being a truly successful swimmer than just finishing first. Caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility are the four core values of our team that we promote through positive coaching techniques, parental involvement, and peer mentoring. Our program focuses on fundamentals, mechanics, and sportsmanship.
POSITIVE IMPACT
Our swim team is more than just another sport for your child to spend time on. We believe that being a Whaler means more than that! Keeping in mind our three areas of focus, the impact this team makes will be seen at home, in the classroom, and in the community that each of us calls home! Our belief is that every program we offer must promote Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility. The Whalers' Swim Team accomplishes this goal by learning about teamwork, sportsmanship, and how to properly represent The Y at swim meets, at school, and in the community.
COMPETITION RULES
The Superior YMCA Whalers Swim Team is part of the Minnesota YMCA Competitive Swim League. The league and our team adhere to guidelines endorsed by the YMCA and the 'Rules that Govern YMCA Competitive Sports.' A copy of these guidelines and rules is available upon request. Competitions follow USA swimming rules.
ELIGIBILITY
Swimmers must be between the ages of 5 and 21 and have either started Kindergarten or completed high school but attend a college without a swim team. Swimmers ages 8 and under must be able to swim 25 yards of freestyle with rotary breathing and 25 yards of backstroke without stopping or using any flotation aids. Youth ages 9 and older must be able to swim 50 yards of freestyle with rotary breathing and 50 yards of backstroke without stopping or using any flotation aids. Swimmers older than 18 may still qualify to swim with us. Please contact Coach Stefan if you're interested in learning more. All swimmers must be members in good standing for the YMCA for which they compete.
JUNIOR WHALERS
Our Junior Whalers programs offers the camaraderie and excitement of being part of a team without the pressure of competition. Designed for swimmers who are comfortable in the water and ready to refine their skills, this program focuses on stroke technique, endurance, and overall fitness in a fun, supportive environment. Swimmers will practice all four competitive strokes — freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly — along with starts, turns, and proper breathing techniques. Not sure which swim program is the best fit for your child? Email us and we’ll help guide you toward the right option!
